A wide range of protocols available on ELIOS’s communication modules

- A modular approach of the protocols available -

To date,
more than 100 protocols (standards or owners) have been established on various ELIOS boards.

The table below shows the ELIOS' standard offer relative to these associated modules and communication protocols (deported protocol on intelligent board + implementation's API available on host machine via a library):

(1) Protocols with (1) are shared on the same board: each line can manage a different protocol, (1) thanks to the software package ELCOMM.
(2) HNZ procedures are protocols used to operate by remote control circuit breaker and are defined by EDF (Electricité De France).
(3) ISO layer transport, used to operate by remote control circuit breaker by EDF.
(4) ICSP is a downloading protocol defined by Microchip.
(5) ELCOMM software allows to build quickly the protocol adapted to your needs.

In the upper table, several modules ELC2, ELC4, ELC8 or ELIUM can cohabit, each with different protocols, inside the same PC.

Application fields and long term strategy

Both Industry and Defence deploy a large variety of equipment which often have specific communication interfaces; these equipments have to dialogue with computer standard platforms to provide configuration, command control, data acquisition, and supervision functions.

The life span of these equipments is, most of the time, long (10 to 20 years) and poses an important problem of long-term product availability for the dialogue with computer standard data-processing servers of various generations, which respective life span is about 5 years.

With a 20-year experience in finding solutions for Telecom, Industry, Defence & Services, ELIOS has defined an offer of communication modules (hardware, software, mechanic) with a functional long-term commitment of over 10 years, and ensures the interoperability with all kinds of specific equipement.

These modules allow at the same time the installation of new communication interfaces and the industrial upgrade of existing gateways.

Implemented Principles

In order to warranty a long-term commitment of the available protocols, ELIOS has developed a strategy of protocol availability and compatibility between the modules and the Operating System of the host machine:

  • ELIOS' communication module always supports several protocols,
  • In general, a protocol is available on several ELIOS communication modules,
  • The API which can manage the protocol of the communication module from the host machine (Industrial PC) does not depend on the communication module that has been chosen,
  • This API is most of the time (except for the sequence of initialisation) independent from the host machine's Operating System,
  • In general, a protocol is available for several Operating System.
